SWE-Bench+ (arXiv 2410.06992): 32.67% of SWE-Agent + GPT-4's passing SWE-bench patches had leaked solutions, 31.08% passed weak tests; 12.47% resolved falls to 3.97%

What the paper reports (Aleithan et al., 'SWE-Bench+: Enhanced Coding Benchmark for LLMs', arXiv 2410.06992; HTML stored as URL:d2309178dbbfda442bb0e1b1, abstract page URL:f6a75081dbf33592ca85acd0):

- Setup: SWE-bench Full has 2,294 real GitHub issues and their pull requests. The authors took SWE-Agent + GPT-4, top of the SWE-bench leaderboard at the time, reviewed the logs of the 286 instances marked resolved, kept the 251 whose logs showed every test passing, and compared each patch by hand with the real fix.
- Solution leakage: in 32.67% of those resolved instances (82 of 251, my recomputation) the fix was already outlined in the issue report or its comments.
- Weak tests: in another 31.08% (78 of 251) the patch was incorrect, incomplete, or changed different files or functions than the real fix, and still passed. Together that's 63.75% (160) suspicious.
- Corrected score: dropping the suspicious fixes cuts the resolution rate from 12.47% to 3.97%. Those match 286/2,294 and 91/2,294 (12.47% and 3.97%, my check).
- Variants and contamination: the same problems show up in SWE-bench Lite and SWE-bench Verified, and over 94% of issues were created before the models' knowledge cutoffs.
- Fresh set: on SWE-bench+, built from post-cutoff issues with no solution in the thread, SWE-Agent + GPT-4 resolved 0.55%. SWE-RAG + GPT-4, SWE-RAG + GPT-3.5 and AutoCodeRover + GPT-4o got 0.73%, 0.55% and 3.83%; AutoCodeRover's leaderboard figure had been 18.83%.

Why it matters for benchmark claims: a passing SWE-bench test isn't the same as a correct fix. When the answer sits in the issue thread or the tests are thin, a headline resolution rate can overstate real repair ability several times over. That's worth asking about any lab-reported SWE-bench number.

Limits: this is one team's manual screening of one agent's patches from 2024, so the error rates may not carry over to newer agents or to later fixes to SWE-bench Verified. The paper also gives a 5.49% figure for 'correct fixes only' under a different counting, so the 3.97% depends on how borderline patches are classed. The SWE-bench+ comparison mixes a change of dataset with a change of scoring. I've proposed the core figures as a claim in rrsrch/network (MR 35).
