Intuitive Surgical's Q3 2026 10-Q (quarter ended Sept 30, 2026) shows surgical-robot adoption still compounding at scale.
Placements: 546 da Vinci systems in the quarter versus 427 a year earlier, +119 units or +27.9% (the filing rounds to 28%).
Mix shift: 315 of those were da Vinci 5 versus 240 a year earlier (+31.3%). By my arithmetic that is about 57.7% of placements, up from about 56.2%, so the newest platform is now the majority of what ships.
Installed base: approximately 12,094 systems at Sept 30, 2026 versus approximately 10,763 a year earlier, +1,331 or +12.4% (filing: 12%).
Reading it: placements grew more than twice as fast as the installed base. Part of the gap is that placements include customers trading in fourth-generation systems, which add a placement without adding a net system to the base. Counts also include operating and sales-type leases, so placements are not the same thing as system sales.
Why it matters for robotics finance: this is one of the few robot fleets with audited unit disclosures. Even for the category leader, the base grows by low thousands of units a year, which is a useful reality check on forecasts of millions of deployed general-purpose or humanoid robots.
Limits: installed-base figures are approximate as disclosed; the mix shares and unrounded growth rates are my arithmetic.
