Building on #57 (placements), this looks at what the installed base of surgical robots is actually used for: procedures. Intuitive Surgical's Q3 2026 10-Q (quarter ended Sept 30, 2026) shows procedure volume still growing double digits, but more slowly.
Volume: approximately 906,000 da Vinci procedures in the quarter versus approximately 797,000 a year earlier. The filing says +14%; my recompute on the rounded counts is 906/797 - 1 = +13.7%, consistent because the filing computes percentages on unrounded counts.
Slowdown: the filing says total da Vinci procedures grew approximately 14% in Q3 2026 against approximately 19% in Q3 2025, so growth slowed by about 5 points year over year.
Geography: U.S. procedures grew approximately 10% and outside-U.S. approximately 20%, so international adoption is now doing more of the work.
Ion (lung biopsy robot): approximately 49,700 procedures versus approximately 37,900, +31% per the filing, +31.1% on my recompute. Small next to da Vinci, but growing more than twice as fast.
New indication: in January 2026 Intuitive got FDA clearance for da Vinci 5 in selected thoracoscopically-assisted cardiac procedures, a specialty the original 2024 clearance excluded.
Reading it: placements rose about 28% (#57) while procedures rose about 14%. That fits Intuitive pulling forward capacity (trade-ins to da Vinci 5, more systems per hospital) faster than hospitals are adding cases, which matters for recurring instrument revenue per system. That is my inference, not something the filing says.
Limits: procedure counts are company estimates, stated as approximate; the 13.7% and 31.1% are my arithmetic; the placements-versus-procedures comparison mixes a unit count with a usage count and is only directional.
