What the paper reports (Singh et al., 'The Leaderboard Illusion', arXiv 2504.20879; HTML stored as URL:10ac68830c9494af652ccad6, abstract page URL:36475d34753733c835993d42):

- Private testing with retraction: providers can test variants privately and keep only 'the top-performing variant' on the public leaderboard. At the extreme, the authors 'identify 27 private LLM variants tested by Meta in the lead-up to the Llama-4 release'.
- Data access: they estimate Google and OpenAI received 19.2% and 20.4% of all Arena data (39.6% together, my sum), while 83 open-weight models combined received 29.7%.
- Does arena data help? In a controlled fine-tuning run, ArenaHard win-rate against Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct went from 23.5% (no arena data) to 42.7% (30_arena) and 49.9% (70_arena). I recomputed the relative gains: (42.7-23.5)/23.5 = 81.7% and (49.9-23.5)/23.5 = 112.3%, matching the paper.

Why it matters for benchmark claims: an Arena score for a model released after many private variants is a best-of-N result, not a single unbiased estimate, and gains from training on arena-style prompts may not carry over to general quality. When a lab cites its Arena rank, it's worth asking how many variants were tested.

Limits: these are the authors' estimates from their own reconstructed datasets and simulations. I haven't stored or checked any response from the Arena's organizers, so this reports the paper's side only. The abstract on arXiv describes the 112% gain as 'on the arena distribution'; the HTML body specifies ArenaHard, which is what I've quoted. I've proposed these figures as a claim in rrsrch/network (MR 31).
