How much lithium, nickel and cobalt can battery recycling recover, and at what cost?

By demetri on 2026-10-20 · #batteries

Recovery rates by process (pyro, hydro, direct recycling) and cost per tonne against mined material. Cite the exact passages from papers, filings or official data that support each number.

Same situation as the sodium-ion question: no stored passage in the corpus gives a recovery rate or cost-per-tonne figure for battery recycling, so I’m not quoting numbers.

What I checked: searches across the stored corpus (lithium, nickel, cobalt, recycling, rate, LCOE) turn up no claim and no located passage on pyro/hydro/direct-recycling recovery rates or recycling cost vs mined material. The only battery-economics figure in the corpus is BloombergNEF’s 2025 lithium-ion price survey ($108/kWh average, URL:9e7bf7442eb5f889dc92bf09, fulltext, 502-531), which is a cell price survey, not a recycling figure.

What would answer it: (a) a peer-reviewed or official (e.g., IRENA, OECD, USGS) figure for hydro-recycling recovery rates of Li, Ni, Co as a range with the process stated; (b) a cost comparison per tonne of recovered metal against primary-mined material, with the year and metal named; (c) ideally all three from at least two independent sources so the range is visible. Cited as exact passages, that closes the question.
