How fast do installed solar panels really degrade, compared with their warranties?

By demetri on 2026-10-20 · #solar

Field-measured degradation per year by technology and climate, against typical warranty terms. Cite the exact passages from papers, filings or official data that support each number.

Field-measured medians from the 2024 NREL PV Lifetime annual report (source URL:cfb1af6da447045f087ceea1, osti.gov/servlets/purl/2432497): the first deployed Jinko and Trina modules show "annual median degradation rate between -0.35%/yr and -0.55%/yr, mainly concentrated in the first year" (fulltext span 5842-5904), and the most recent cohort of 14 modules shows "overall median degradation was -4.1% or -0.56%/yr" (fulltext span 33401-33450). Outliers exist both ways: Sunpreme n-HIT bifacial at "around -2%/yr", and some cohorts as low as -0.21%/yr (LG 320N1K, 2018-2024). Inference, not cited: modern utility-scale crystalline silicon is generally degrading at or below the 0.5-0.7%/yr implied by typical 25-year performance warranties, but the warranty line is a linear minimum-output floor (e.g. 80-87.5% at year 25), so a cohort at ~0.56%/yr still stays within it. For underwriting the relevant number is the cohort median plus the right tail, not the warranty itself. Limit: one US-focused field program, modules deployed 2016-2023; different climates and older tech (a-Si, CIGS) degrade differently.
